Visite de Udo - Udo visit

Cela fait quelques semaines déjà que nous sommes allé visiter "l'île de la vache", au début de l'année. Voici donc un petit résumé photographique de notre expédition:

It's been a few weeks now that we went to visit the "Island of the cow" at the beginning of the school year. Here is a small photographic summary of our expedition:

Nous avons débuté notre journée en prenant un taxi à 6h AM pour se rendre à l'autre extrémité de l'île (1h de route environ). Ensuite, nous avons pris un traversier pour atteindre la petite île de 6 km2.

We started the day by taking a taxi at 6 AM to go to the other end of the island (approximately 1 hour drive). Then we took a ferry to the tiny island of about 6 km2.

Arrivé sur l'île, nous voulions louer des scouters mais j'étais le seul à pouvoir conduire puisque les autres n'avaient pas de permis de conduire international... on a donc opté pour les bicyclettes, donc deux tandems, ce qui a rendu l'expérience assez intéressante tout compte fait! On s'est arrêté pour prendre un smoothie dans un petit café bien charmant en bord de mer.

Arrived on the island, we wanted to rent scooters but I was the only one able to drive because the others did not have their international driving license ... we opted for bikes, so two tandems, which still made the experience rather interesting! We stopped to take a smoothie in a small, charming café on the seafront.

Preuve de la formation volcanique de l'île... les coulée de lave solidifiées. Nous avons aussi vu cette ancienne tour de signalisation. Lorsqu'un ennemi approchait (provenant bien souvent du Japon), ils allumaient un gros feu sur la tour, et les habitant de Jeju pouvaient ainsi être avertis.

Pictured here is the evidence of the volcanic formation of the island ... the solidified lava flow. We also saw this ancient signaling tower. When an approaching enemy (often from Japan) came, they lit a big fire on the tower, and Jeju's inhabitants could thus be warned.

Ensuite, nous avons pédalé un peu jusqu'à s'arrêter à un petit pavillon pour prendre une collation ensemble. (crédit photos: Joshua Anderson)

Voyant le phare haut-perché sur la colline principale de l'île, nous nous sommes dirigé vers cette direction. En chemin, nous avons pu observer une grotte et une plage de sable noir (pierre volcanique); nous nous sommes donc arrêtés pour aller explorer ce coin de l'île. Nous étions évidemment les seuls à nous baigner, les autres touristes étant tous des Chinois en chemise propre et talons haut :) L'eau est superbe par contre, ultra claire.

Seeing the high-pitched lighthouse on the main hill of the island, we headed to that direction. On the way, we could observe a cave and a black sand beach (volcanic rock); So we stopped to explore this corner of the island. Obviously we were the only ones to swim, other tourists all being Chinese in clean clothes and high heels :) The water was beautiful, ultra clear.

Après la petite baignade, nous sommes allé voir le phare tout en haut.

After our little swim, we went to see the lighthouse at the top of the hill.

Nous avons continué de nous promener à vélo pour un moment, et puis nous sommes retournés au traversier pour revenir sur Jeju.

We continued to bike for a while, and then went back to take the ferry to return to Jeju.

L'amas rocheux qu'on voit sur cette dernière photo est un site classé patrimoine mondial UNESCO, Seongsan park. Comme il était à 10 minutes de marche à pied du quai d'où le traversier partait, nous nous sommes décidé à y aller. Nous devions monter des marches pendant une bonne demi-heure pour atteindre le sommet, mais la vue en valait vraiment le coup!

The big rocky hill you see on the last picture is a UNESCO World Heritage listed site, Seongsan park. As it was only a 10 minute walk from the dock where the ferry was leaving, we decided to go. We had to climb steps for a good half hour to reach the top, but the view was worth it!

Et c'est ce qui a conclu notre journée. Petite anecdote: cette journée-là, c'était Chuseok, l'équivalent de l'Action de grâce en Corée. Comme c'était un jour férié, on a failli être incapable de revenir en taxi au campus puisqu'à 19h il n'y en avait plus en circulation apparemment! Heureusement, on a finalement réussi à en avoir un grâce à notre amie Coréenne qui a su convaincre deux taxis de venir nous chercher!

And that's what concludes our day. Anecdote: on that day, it was Chuseok, equivalent to Thanksgiving in Korea. As it was a national holiday, we were almost unable to return back by taxi to the campus since at 19h there was apparently no more available! Thankfully, we finally managed to get one thanks to our Korean friend who convinced two taxis drivers to come pick us up!
