Bonne lecture!

As part of our biblical geography class we made a trip to Israel for 10 days in March (wow already more than a month since we got back!) to see with our own eyes the wonders of the Holy Land. Given the large amount of sites that we saw (about fifty!), I will write an article a day for each day of travel. Enjoy the reading!

We left on Friday morning from Jeju to get to Seoul, and aside from the fact that we almost missed our connection to Rome everything went very smoothly ... We saw the sunset on the Mediterranean from the plane, it was a pretty amazing sight! Two hours of waiting before flying again to Tel Aviv in Israel. We arrived at 2am local time Saturday (11am in Korea).

Tel Aviv's airport is super modern and clean!

This first day was particularly long because we had to wait until 5am for the buses that would take us to the first site, so we couldn't take a shower or sleep (let's say sleeping in the plane is not exactly easy). The first site we visited was the city of Jaffa (or Joppa).

(1) JAFFA/JOPPA

From Joppa we had a really nice view on Tel Aviv's skyline.

We can see in the water the ruins of the docks of the city dating from Jesus' time.

Joppa was the only maritime town of Israel, making it an important trading center. It was in this city that Jonah took the boat that would take him in the opposite direction of Nineveh, where God had called him to minister to non-Jews. It is also in this city that the cedars from Lebanon were received for the construction of the temple and the palace of Solomon in Jerusalem. It was at Joppa that Dorkas was resurrected by Peter and it is also here that Peter received the vision of God asking him to preach the gospel to non-Jews in Caesarea.

We took our breakfast in a bread restaurant with freshly baked bread and pastries. The waiters were ridiculously funny!

Caesarea was our next destination. This city was built by Herod the Great in 22 BC and was named in honor of Caesar Agrippa. It was the largest city in Israel after Jerusalem, an important commercial port and city, including all the typical Roman infrastructures like a theater, hippodrome, colonnaded palaces, public baths, gladiator arena, etc. Herod the Great was famous for building all grandiose constructions, and that's exactly what he did with this city (it's reminiscent Dubai these days ...) It was the capital of Judea in the time of Jesus. It was at Caesarea Peter preached the Gospel for the first time to non-Jews. That's also when Paul returned after his third missionary journey in Greece, and that's where he was imprisoned for two years before being sent to Rome.

The palace was half built on the ground and in the water. It had an interior fresh water pool, provided by the Roman aqueduct.

We can see how deep they had to dig to reveal the ruins of the entire city that had been filled in with tons of dirt and pieces of broken pottery.

(3) MONT CARMEL - MOUNT CARMEL

The third site of the day was Mount Carmel in Galilee. It was on this mountain Eli taught his disciples and prayed that the God would stop the rain until Israel repented. Finally, it was there he confronted the prophets of Baal, and where they were slaughtered. From Mount Carmel, there is a great view of the Jezreel Valley. This is the piece of land that saw the most battles occur in history since 32 wars took place there. It is also in this valley that the Battle of Armageddon (final battle between the rebels and the heavenly armies) will be held according Revelation.

Israel was surprisingly green with a lot of wild flowers and little town built on the hills' sides.

We had an excellent dinner in a Palestinian restaurant. On the menu: chickpea salad, cucumber, tomatoes and fresh carrots, pita with hummus and schnitzel.

Finally, our last site was the city of Nazareth, where Jesus grew up. Nazareth is today predominantly Arab, but the huge catholic Basilica of the Annunciation built in the 70s stands right in the center. Nazareth had a population of about twenty families in the time of Jesus, but is now inhabited by 70,000 people. We went on mount Precipice, a cliff overlooking the Jezreel Valley. It was really special, because it's probably a place where Jesus often came during his childhood and adolescence to watch the landscape around, and this is also was almost killed, when the people wanted to throw him out of the cliff after he preached in the synagogue of his native town.

We finished the day by driving down to the Sea of Galilee to join the group of students of the New York campus. We stayed in a resort on the lake. We were paired with American students in a cabin with a bedroom (king size bed!), living room, kitchenette and a large bathroom. We had access to the beach (the water was a bit cold though), and the food was simply divine!

Really, the sunsets were absolutely astonishing!
